The Gentlemen - a review

I've been admiring the Netflix series The Gentlemen.

In one of the first episodes an associate of an organised crime boss sends people back to his council flat in Kennington to find his passport so he can start a new life.

The first 2 series follows the passage of a legalise "marijuana" bill through the House of Lords.

The Lords kill the bill following a certain amount of corruption and influence.

Series 3 is currently being filmed in the London Borough of Brent - South Kilburn estate.

Comments on instagram admired the costumes.

These fine concrete blocks make a fine backdrop.  I am told that the homes inside are lovely too.

They're being "regenerated" by the council with the billionaire property empire Ballymore as a long term partner through their efforts.  Ballymore will provide some of the money up front.  It's not clear what they'll get in exchange probably a good chunk of profit over serveral years.

The destruction of these timeless 20th century pieces of architecture with huge embodied carbon emissions in the manufacture and transport of the concrete and steel - is criminal.

No doubt, and we don't know the full extent of this, foreign capital is using London as a store for their wealth.  This may be to avoid taxes, or more seriously to avoid transparency, whether these earnings were stolen from the people in their home countries, or being used as a convenient way to launder money.  This was laid bare in Top Man, filmed here in Barnet - The Old Library.

On the other hand the Gentlemen examines the English class system.  It takes a detailed look at the aristocracy, starring one Lord from another series set before the war.  It's a historic subject that is one of our main exports, that fascinates the world.  Sadly, Tourists won't be able to see South Kilburn as it stands for much longer.  The estate is already fenced off and under manned guard.
