Yesterday was the second anniversary of the first massacre in South Africa since the fall of Apartheid. I attended a memorial service to remember the 26 miners shot down. I had a chance to represent the Green Party so I made a speech, stating my privilege in this country's class system, but hoping that the Green Party will support the Marikana Solidarity Campaign as soon as possible as we are a democratic party like trade unions. I kept it brief but managed to relate the issue to the living wage, air quality, and housing. It is probably one of the most important speeches I have ever made in my life. Two people spoke to me afterwards; one academic who studies techno-fixes, and one poet by the name of Bantu Masta who says he's really into the Green Peace thing.
